Citizenship, Religious Education and Community, Beliefs & Life Skills
Curriculum Intent
In Citizenship, Religious Education (RE) and Community Beliefs and Life Skills (CBLS) we want our students to be filled with curiosity and fascination at the world around them; locally, nationally and globally. We want our students to know and understand what it means to be informed citizens today and show keen interest in the diversity of our societies, cultures and religious beliefs.
In our curriculum at Philip Morant School, we aim to deliver a relevant, engaging and challenging curriculum to all of our students, which broadens their minds and prepares them for life beyond Philip Morant School. Across our highly relevant, thematic curriculum, our students learn to tackle many of the ‘big questions’, important issues, taboo and controversial topics that are of the foremost importance within our school and wider community. Students study religious texts and historic and researched evidence surrounding these. Pupils study our curriculum through three lenses; a Theological lens (thinking through believing), a Philosophical lens (thinking through thinking), and a Human / Social Science lens (thinking through living). We develop students’ ability to learn “how to know” about religion and non-religion.
It is important to us that Philip Morant School feels like a place of sanctuary for our students, and consequently we offer a fully inclusive curriculum, catering to our diverse student body, which aims to be welcoming to all. Our curriculum promotes the growth of an empathetic mindset in our students, but also offers a safe space where students can be inquisitive and debate in an open-minded, non-judgemental way. It is imperative that our young people have an awareness and a genuine consideration of the important issues which surround their everyday lives. We see it as our responsibility to educate the future generations of our town, county and country in; fundamental British values, democracy, the rule of law, respect and tolerance, individual liberty, and compassion towards people with any and all religious beliefs, from all walks of life. Our curriculum encapsulates our duty to create valued, productive, and contributing members of our society, who play an active rather than passive role in building a community where everyone feels they belong.
